Vedic Astrologers — Find a Jyotishi
What is Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology — properly called Jyotish, "the science of light" — is the classical astrology of the Indian subcontinent. Its earliest texts (the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the Brihat Jataka) date to roughly the 5th–6th century CE.
Jyotish differs from Western astrology in three core ways: it uses the sidereal zodiac (actual star positions) rather than the season-based tropical zodiac; it adds the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) to the 12 signs; and it uses the Vimshottari Dasha system, a 120-year planetary period system unique to Jyotish.
How is it different from Western astrology?
Western modern astrology tends to be psychological and evolutionary in style. Vedic astrology tends to be more predictive, with explicit timing language. The two systems are not rivals so much as different lenses — many people who have had readings in both report each one illuminates things the other doesn't.
How to choose a qualified Vedic astrologer
Jyotish is the most teacher-lineage-driven of any astrological tradition. Quality signals: BAVA (British Association for Vedic Astrology Diploma); CVA / ACVA (Council / American College of Vedic Astrology certifications); guru-lineage / parampara (direct study with a recognised teacher); ISAR CAP for Western-based practitioners.
Red flags: pressure to buy an expensive puja, yagya, or gemstone "to fix" something; fear-based predictions; no specific training listed; claims of perfect accuracy. Cultural note: in India, modest gemstone or puja recommendations are common and inexpensive — the scam version is always identifiable by the price tag.
