How Much Does an Astrology Reading Cost? The Real Numbers
What an astrology reading actually costs in 2026 — across junior, mid-career, and senior practitioners, and the difference between hourly consultations and the per-minute psychic-chat marketplaces that dominate Google.
Pricing in astrology is more transparent than the field's reputation suggests. Most serious practitioners list their rates publicly on their own sites; the difficulty for new clients is not finding the prices but understanding the gap between what a junior independent practitioner charges and what a published author with a thirty-year practice charges, and why that gap is what it is.
This guide gives the real ranges you should expect to see in 2026, organised by experience tier and by service type, and explains the pricing structures to avoid.
The three tiers
**Junior practitioners** — newly trained, usually within their first three to five years of public practice — typically charge $80 to $150 for a 60-minute natal reading. These are usually graduates of one of the recognised programs (the Forrest Apprenticeship, the Centre for Psychological Astrology, NCGR, ISAR, the STA, or one of the Hellenistic certification courses) who are building their client base. The work is real and the training is real. The lower price reflects market positioning, not lower quality of the reading itself. For many clients this is the right entry point.
**Mid-career practitioners** — five to fifteen years of active practice, sometimes with their own teaching or writing — typically run $150 to $300 for a 60–90 minute natal reading. This is the largest segment of the field and where most working astrologers sit. A practitioner at this tier usually has a clear specialty, an established client roster, and a recognisable voice. Most of the day-to-day astrology consulting that happens is done by practitioners in this range.
**Senior practitioners** — published authors, school faculty, names in the field, often with twenty-plus years of practice — typically charge $300 to $600 for a single reading, and the most well-known names can run $1,000 or more. At this tier you are paying for the body of work the practitioner has accumulated and for the depth of pattern recognition that comes from having read thousands of charts. Several practitioners in our directory sit in this range. They are usually booked weeks or months out.
A few practitioners across all tiers offer follow-up readings at a reduced rate (often half of the initial reading) on the assumption that the second session is shorter and the practitioner already knows the chart. This is a good signal — it means the practitioner is set up for an ongoing relationship rather than one-off transactions.
Service types and what they actually cover
A **natal reading** — a comprehensive read of your birth chart — is the standard service and the one whose pricing the tiers above describe. It usually runs 60 to 90 minutes, is recorded, and is the entry point for most ongoing client relationships.
A **synastry reading** — a relationship reading covering two birth charts together — typically costs more than a natal reading because the practitioner is reading two charts and the inter-aspects between them. Expect $200 to $500 at the mid-career tier, more at the senior tier. Several mid-career practitioners offer fixed-price written synastry reports at a lower entry point.
A **transit or yearly forecast reading** — a forward-looking reading of what the planets are doing in your chart over the next 6 to 12 months — typically runs the same as a natal or slightly less. Practitioners trained in Hellenistic technique often build their forecasting around profections and zodiacal releasing and price these readings as their primary service.
A **horary reading** — answering a single specific question by casting a chart for the moment of the question — is usually cheaper than a natal because it is more focused. Expect $80 to $200 at the trained-practitioner level. Horary specialists are a small group; several are listed in our horary astrologers hub.
A **rectification** — the technical process of estimating an unknown birth time from life events — is the most expensive service in the field because of the labour involved. Expect $500 to $2,000 depending on the practitioner and the complexity of the case.
The marketplace pricing trap
The cheapest astrology pricing on Google is not actually cheap. Per-minute psychic-chat marketplaces — Keen, Kasamba, and dozens of similar platforms — list astrologers at rates that look like $1.99 or $4.99 per minute, which seems low until you realise that a real consultation is at minimum 30 minutes and usually 60. At $4.99 per minute, a 60-minute reading is $299 — about the same as a senior independent practitioner — but with the structural difference that the practitioner is incentivised to keep you on the line, not to give you the answer in the most useful form.
Marketplace astrologers are not all bad. Some are real practitioners moonlighting on the platforms because they need a stream of new clients. But the structure of the pricing is the structure of the practice. A practitioner who charges $250 for a recorded 90-minute reading is selling you their preparation, the recording, and the depth of attention. A practitioner charging by the minute is selling you minutes.
Avoid any pricing structure where the practitioner's incentive is to extend rather than complete the work. Avoid any practitioner who will not state a fixed total price up front. These are not signs of better availability; they are signs of a different business.
A faster, lighter alternative for relationship questions
For many people the actual question they are bringing to astrology is one specific question about one specific relationship. A live consultation with a senior practitioner is the best way to answer that, and it takes weeks to book and costs hundreds. If what you actually need is a decisive read on whether a particular relationship is worth investing in, our $49 Is This Relationship Worth It? reading runs a full computed synastry on both birth charts and delivers a Green / Yellow / Red flag verdict in 72 hours, written and keepable. It is not a substitute for working with a senior astrologer on a long-term basis. It is a substitute for spending three hundred dollars and three weeks to get the answer to one question.
If you are looking for a longer-term astrological relationship — natal, ongoing forecast work, or depth counselling over time — choose a practitioner from the directory and book directly with them. The directory is the directory; we don't take commissions.
