Synastry is the branch of astrology that examines relationships by comparing two natal charts. The word comes from Greek: syn (together) and astron (star). The technique is one of the oldest in astrological practice — references to comparing charts for compatibility appear in Hellenistic and medieval texts — and it remains one of the most commonly requested services from professional astrologers today.

How Synastry Works

A synastry reading starts with two complete natal charts — the birth chart of each person in the relationship. The astrologer then analyzes how the planets in one person's chart relate to the planets in the other person's chart, looking specifically at the interaspects: the angular relationships between planets across the two charts.

For example: Person A has the Sun at 15° Aries. Person B has the Moon at 14° Aries. This is a Sun-Moon conjunction across the charts — a traditionally significant synastry aspect associated with a quality of recognition and emotional resonance between two people. The Sun-person's identity (Sun) connects naturally with the Moon-person's emotional nature (Moon).

Or: Person A has Saturn at 12° Scorpio. Person B has Venus at 11° Scorpio. This Saturn conjunct Venus interaspect traditionally indicates that the Saturn person may feel restrictive or sobering to the Venus person — their warmth and ease is experienced as constrained in the presence of Saturn. At its best, the Saturn person provides structure and seriousness to the relationship; at its worst, they're limiting to the Venus person's pleasure and self-expression.

A thorough synastry reading examines dozens of interaspects, not just a few.

Key Interaspects and What They Mean

Sun-Moon connections. When one person's Sun aspects another's Moon, there's often a fundamental attunement — a sense of recognition or complementarity. Sun-Moon conjunctions and trines are among the most commonly cited indicators of long-term compatibility.

Venus-Mars connections. These describe physical attraction and desire. Venus-Mars conjunctions, trines, and even squares indicate sexual chemistry — the friction of the square doesn't eliminate attraction; it may intensify it.

Saturn contacts. Saturn interaspects to personal planets often produce a quality of seriousness, commitment, and longevity in relationships. They can also produce restriction, criticism, or feeling slowed down. Saturn conjunct the Sun: one person's identity meets the other's demand for maturity. Saturn conjunct Venus: the Saturn person may feel sobering to the Venus person's ease and pleasure.

Seventh house activations. When one person's planets land in another's seventh house (the house of partnership), the relationship feels significant and destined — for good or ill. Strong seventh house synastry often correlates with important, formative relationships regardless of whether they're ultimately lasting or not.

Nodal contacts. When one person's planets contact another's lunar nodes (the North and South Node), many astrologers interpret this as a quality of karmic significance or past-life connection. These contacts often accompany relationships that feel fated or uncommonly important, regardless of their ultimate trajectory.

The Composite Chart: A Companion Technique

Related to synastry is the composite chart — a single chart created by calculating the midpoints between two people's natal charts. Where synastry shows how two individuals interact (how A's planets relate to B's planets), the composite shows the relationship itself as an entity: what is the character of this partnership? What does it want to become? What are its inherent strengths and challenges?

Many professional astrologers use both synastry and the composite chart in relationship readings — the synastry for the interpersonal chemistry and the composite for the relationship's trajectory and character.

What Synastry Can Tell You

Synastry can reliably describe the quality of the dynamic between two people: where there's natural ease, where there's friction, where one person's way of being amplifies or inhibits the other's. It can identify dominant themes in a relationship — whether power dynamics are prominent, whether communication flows naturally, whether the sexual chemistry is strong, whether there's a quality of mutual growth or of mutual limiting.

It can also identify timing: when certain planetary transits activate key synastry points, the dynamics those points represent often come to the foreground.

What Synastry Can't Tell You

Synastry cannot tell you whether a relationship will last. Long-term relationships require choice, commitment, and compatible life circumstances in addition to astrological compatibility. Some of the most enduring relationships have challenging synastry; some of the most harmonious-looking charts on paper don't produce lasting connection.

Synastry also can't tell you whether a relationship is healthy. Intensity in synastry — strong Saturn contacts, Pluto-Venus connections, Moon-Pluto aspects — describes the relationship's depth and gravitational pull, not its emotional health. A synastry that looks dramatic and powerful might describe a relationship that's genuinely transformative or one that's destructively enmeshed. The chart describes the character of the dynamic; humans decide what to do with it.

Getting a Synastry Reading

To have a synastry chart read professionally, you need accurate birth data for both people — date, time, and location of birth. Birth time is particularly important because it determines the ascendant and house positions, which are often the most personally specific parts of the analysis. Our directory of professional astrologers includes practitioners who specialize in relationship and synastry work. Relationship readings are available if you'd like to start there.

Frequently asked questions

Is synastry better than Sun sign compatibility?

Considerably. Sun sign compatibility — Aries and Sagittarius are compatible, Virgo and Gemini have friction — describes a real tendency at very low resolution. Synastry examines dozens of interaspects between all of the planets, giving a far more specific and accurate picture of how two particular people actually function together.

Do I need my partner's exact birth time for synastry?

It's very helpful but not strictly required. Without the birth time, you lose the ascendant, house positions, and chart-ruler analysis — which are often among the most revealing parts of synastry. If you only know the birth date and location, a skilled astrologer can still do meaningful work with the planetary sign placements and interaspects, but with those limitations acknowledged.

Can synastry identify a "soulmate"?

Synastry can identify relationships with unusual depth, resonance, or a quality of significance — often described in astrological language through North Node contacts, strong seventh house activations, or particularly powerful Venus-Jupiter-Pluto interaspects. Whether any of that constitutes a "soulmate" in a metaphysical sense depends on your framework. What synastry can say is that this relationship carries particular weight and character.
