A stellium is a concentration of three or more planets gathered in the same zodiac sign or the same astrological house. It's one of the most noticeable features a natal chart can have — a focal point where a significant chunk of your planetary energy is compressed into one area. The themes of that sign or house become impossible to ignore in how you show up in the world.
Where Does the Term Come From?
The word stellium comes from the Latin stella, meaning star. In ancient astrology, a gathering of planets in one sign was called a stellium and considered a powerful omen — not necessarily good or bad, just concentrated. Hellenistic astrologers paid close attention to these clusters because they amplified and blended planetary energies in ways that single planets couldn't.
Some traditional astrologers require four or more planets for a stellium; modern astrologers typically count three. The Sun and Moon are usually included. Most astrologers don't count the Ascendant or Midheaven as planets for this purpose, though some do.

Consider someone born with the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Mars all in Scorpio in the 8th house. Every one of those energies — identity, relationships, communication, and drive — expresses through Scorpio's intensity, desire for depth, and discomfort with anything surface-level. All four fall in the 8th house, which rules transformation, shared resources, sexuality, and psychological depth. This person likely has an intense inner life, may be drawn to psychology, therapy, or financial work, and almost certainly approaches relationships with a level of seriousness others find unusual. The stellium doesn't trap them there — but it's undeniably their gravitational center.
Common Misconceptions
A stellium is not automatically a problem. It's often treated as overwhelming or heavy, but it can also indicate exceptional depth, focus, and capability in one area. The challenge is integration — learning to draw on other parts of the chart instead of defaulting to the stellium constantly. It's also worth noting that a stellium in one house doesn't mean the other eleven houses are empty — most charts still have planets spread elsewhere, even with a concentration in one zone.
