A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows where the Sun, Moon, and each of the nine planets were positioned across the 12 signs of the zodiac at that precise instant.
Astrologers use your birth chart to understand your core personality (Sun sign), emotional world (Moon sign), outward presence (Rising sign), communication style (Mercury), love nature (Venus), drive (Mars), and your relationship to expansion, limitation, and transformation through the outer planets.
Unlike a single Sun sign horoscope, your full natal chart is uniquely yours — as individual as a fingerprint. Two people born on the same day in different cities, or even at different times in the same city, will have meaningfully different charts.
Start with the Big Three. Your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign form the core of your chart. The Sun describes who you're growing into. The Moon describes your inner emotional world and instincts. The Rising sign (Ascendant) describes how you meet the world and how others first experience you.
Look at your planetary placements. Each planet represents a different part of your psyche. Mercury governs thinking and communication. Venus governs love and values. Mars governs desire and action. Jupiter and Saturn describe where life expands and where it contracts. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto describe generational themes — and their house positions reveal where those themes live most personally in your life.
Notice patterns. If many of your planets are in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), you tend toward action, passion, and initiative. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) suggest groundedness and practicality. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) favor thought and connection. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) run deep with feeling and intuition.
Your birth time determines your Rising sign (Ascendant), Midheaven (MC), and house positions. Without it, all your planetary sign placements — Sun, Moon, and Mercury through Pluto — will still be accurate. If you were born near a sign cusp, the Moon may also shift. You can request a copy of your birth certificate from your state's vital records office to find the exact time.
Your Sun sign is the most conscious layer — who you're evolving into, your core will. Your Moon sign is the most instinctive layer — your emotional responses, needs, and inner life. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is how you appear to others and how you instinctively approach new situations. Together they describe you more fully than any single sign alone.
This calculator uses the Astronomy Engine, a high-precision astronomical library accurate to a small fraction of a degree for all planetary positions from 1000 BCE to 3000 CE. For virtually all birth dates in the 20th and 21st centuries, planetary sign placements will be exact. Ascendant accuracy depends on an exact birth time and location.
This calculator uses Whole Sign houses — the oldest house system in Western astrology, recently experiencing a strong revival. In Whole Sign houses, the sign containing your Ascendant becomes the entire first house, the next sign the second house, and so on. Many contemporary astrologers prefer it for its clarity and historical roots.
The outer planets move so slowly that they stay in the same sign for years or decades — Pluto spends up to 30 years in a single sign. In sign, they describe your generation's collective themes. What matters most personally is which house they occupy in your chart, which reveals where those collective forces work most directly in your individual life.
