What to Know Before You Book an Astrology Reading
The astrology reading market ranges from deeply insightful to genuinely useless. Before you pay for a reading, it helps to know what you're actually buying.
What a birth chart reading should do
A genuine birth chart reading works from your exact date, time, and place of birth. It examines the positions of the planets at that moment — the houses they occupy, the aspects (angular relationships) between them, and what this configuration says about your tendencies, strengths, and recurring patterns.
A good reader won't predict your future. They'll help you understand the territory of your chart — which gives you more context for decisions, patterns, and timing.
Red flags
- Readers who tell you only what you want to hear
- Readings that focus entirely on fortune (what will happen) rather than pattern (what keeps happening)
- No birth time required — this makes house calculations impossible and reduces accuracy significantly
What to ask before booking
- What approach do you take? (Psychological, evolutionary, traditional, Vedic)
- Do you require exact birth time?
- How long is the reading, and do you provide a recording?
- What's your background or training?
If you want to understand your own chart first
It's worth getting a baseline in how birth charts work before you pay for a reading. Our guides on reading your first birth chart are a starting point. Or, if you want to go properly deep, Be Well Academy's Evolutionary Astrology course teaches you how to interpret charts for yourself — which may be more valuable than paying someone else to do it.
